What Does DEF Fluid Stand For?

Diesel Emission Fluid is more commonly referred to as DEF fluid. This fluid goes by two names:

DEF is sprayed into the exhaust stream of the diesel vehicle and breaks down any dangerous NOx emissions into harmless water and nitrogen. DEF is not a fuel additive and does not come into contact with diesel. It is stored in a separate tank. It is important to note that DEF fluid freezes at 12°F. If it is to be used, it needs to be melted or thawed to function properly. PTC heaters are one way to thaw out the fluid.
