DEF fluid is a type of fluid that goes by two names:

  • Diesel exhaust fluid
  • Diesel emission fluid

In short, DEF fluid is a non-hazardous solution made up of 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionized water. It is sprayed into the exhaust stream of diesel vehicles in order to break down any dangerous NOx emissions down into harmless water and nitrogen. DEF fluid is not a fuel additive and does not come into contact with diesel. It should be stored in a separate tank for safekeeping. Please keep in mind that DEF fluid freezes at 12°F. In order to effectively use it, the fluid needs to be melted or thawed. PTC heaters are one way to thaw out the fluid properly.

This uses a catalyst system to break down dangerous NOx emissions by diesel engines into nitrogen and water.
